(This is a collaborative diary between taylormattd and Elise.)
taylormattd and I decided ages ago that what Daily Kos really needs is fun diary where we can all hang out and talk about drinking, or drink, or think about drinking...or- well, you get the idea :-)
Join us below for some recipes, a few good brewery suggestions, and some games!
Grab yourself a drink- some water, tea, soda, a cocktail, a beer, some wine...whatever strikes you as good for a Friday night :-)
Here's a site with some drinking games: Drinking Games and Rules... you can find a few more here.
Some of my favorite games:
Quarters:
Quarters is perhaps the original drinking game, and can be played anywhere there is alcohol.
Players sit around a table armed with a quarter. A cup (empty or full of alcohol, depending on your preference) is placed in the middle of the table, at least 10 inches away from all players. If the table is not big enough, just move the cup when it's a new player's turn.
The players must bounce a quarter off the table and into the cup, in any way possible using only the quarter, the table and the cup. If successful, the player makes another player drink, and gets to try again. (If you're using a full cup, the assigned player must drink the whole cup and retrieve the quarter.)
If the player missed the cup, the player to their left is passed the quarter and they get to toss.
Some optional rules: If the quarter bounces off the rim, a re-toss is allowed. If the rim is struck three times in a row though, the player must drink.
Also, if the player misses they can call "Double!". They toss again, and if successful, they assign a player to chug their entire drink. If they miss though, the player must chug his drink.
Asshole:
This is a slightly more complex game, but very, very fun when mastered. This game requires a minimum of 5 people to play. High boot factor.
The first hand of asshole is the establishing hand. This will decide who is the President, V-Pres, Normal People, and the Asshole for the next round.
Approxiametly 6 or 7 cards are dealt to each player, depending on the number playing this can be higher or lower. The rank of the cards is as follows (most powerful to least powerful) 2, A, K, Q, ... 4, and 3.
Some is chosen to go first and they play a card, the next person has two options:
1. to play a card higher than (but not the same) as the previous card.
2. or to pass on that turn.
For example, if a 4 is lead, a next player must play HIGHER than a 4, the the next player has to play higher than that. A new hand starts when all players pass, or when someone plays a 2 (the most powerful card). The last person to play a card, leads the next hand.
This proceeds until all players are rid of their cards. The first player out of cards is the Pres for the next round, the next out becomes the VP, the next players out are normal, and the last person out is the Asshole.
However lets say that the person leading has two 5's, this person may play them both, then the next player must play two of the same card HIGHER than five; this player cannot play one card or three cards, only two. As well, three, or even four, of the same card may be lead. The only time a player may lay one card in a situation like this is if it is a two (the power card); a single two, beats everything, and the hand ends followed by a new lead.
The roles for each player are as follows:
President: can make any player drink at any time, no-one may make the President drink but self. The Pres is the first player to start each round (benefits of power). And the Pres should never have to refill own beer.
Vice President: can make any player drink at any time (except Pres), the only the Pres or self can make the VP drink. The VP goes second in each round.
Normal People: These players can make each other drink as well as the Asshole. They play in the order they finished the previous round; first normal out follows the VP, second normal out follows first, etc.
Asshole: for many reasons, this player is truly the Asshole. This player has to do all dealing of cards, all sweeping of cards after the hands, and can not make any other player drink. The asshole plays last in each round.
A few recommendations, at the end of each round, the players should move seats in order to reflect the hierachy, and proper playing order. Play your lowest cards first. Abuse the power when Pres or VP, but remember it will always come back to haunt you, especially when abusing the Asshole.
Play as many rounds as desired.
Here are some of my favorite drink recipes, as well as a few sites where you can look up recipes of your own:
Webtender is helpful in a variety of ways.
Drinksmixer has over 11,000 recipes!
On a search I found this one-no idea if it's good...but I thought the name was funny :-)
A Little Dick'll Do
Ingredients-
2 oz George Dickel® Tennessee whiskey
3 - 5 splashes Mountain Dew® citrus soda
Pour the George Dickel into the glass. Top off with Mountain Dew, and serve.
I adore Mojitos:
Ingredients-
3 fresh mint sprigs
2 tsp sugar
3 tbsp fresh lime juice
1 1/2 oz light rum
club soda
In a tall thin glass, crush part of the mint with a fork to coat the inside. Add the sugar and lime juice and stir thoroughly. Top with ice. Add rum and mix. Top off with chilled club soda. Add a lemon slice and the remaining mint, and serve.
Here are some of taylormattd's drink recipes:
This is a Green Dragon, which I love:
1 1/2 oz Gin
Juice of 1/2 Lemon
1/2 oz Kummel
1/2 oz Green Creme de Menthe
4 dash Orange Bitters
Ice
I also love a Tom Collins:
2 oz Gin
Juice of 1/2 Lemon
1 1/2 tsp Powdered Sugar
Club Soda
Ice
Then of course, there is a Gimlet (a classic drink):
2 oz gin
1/2 oz lime juice
1 lime wedge
And my favorite, of which I will have at least one tonight, a simple gin & tonic:
2 oz gin
5 oz tonic water
1 lime wedge
Pour gin and tonic water into glass with ice cubes. Stir well. Garnish with lime wedge.
So those are my gin recipes.
Here are some of taylormattd's favorite Seattle Breweries:
Big Time Brewery & Alehouse
4133 University Way NE
This is a brewery in the heart of the Univeristy District of Seattle (essentially part of the University of Washington). A welcoming feel and good bar food, this brewery is conviently located in the middle of the UW campus.

Hale's Ales Brewery & Pub
4301 Leary Way NW, Seattle, Washington
This brewery is between Ballard and Fremont in Seattle. Amazing beers, and if you ever need to find space for a party or other event, this brewery has a great conference room area to rent.

Pyramid Breweries
1201 First Ave. S., Seattle, Washington
If you are going to a Mariners game, this is a fun place to start before you are forced to by the $8 Budweisers inside of the stadium. Wonderful beers. The Pyramid Hefeweizen is one of my favorites.

And now, for a little drinking game of our own this evening:
-For every two pictures in a nominated comment, take one drink.
-For every comment that says "Jeers" or "Cheers", take one drink.
-For every comment that's nominated twice, take a drink. (everyone was reading my mind tonight...or I was reading everyone else's minds...scary either way)
-For every comment nominated by a Kossack that is your friend, take one drink.
Feel free to add more to this list of rules, I just wanted to get us started...and add your own favorite drinks, games, and breweries in the comments :-)
