In this CQ Politics article, the editors discuss how the Republicans think they can take back the two fairly Democratic CT-02 and CT-05. Both of these districts supported John Kerry in 2004 by 12 and one point respectively while he was losing nationwide. In my opinion, if George W. Bush could not carry these districts in one of the better recent Republican years, I don't see any other Republican doing it against incumbents.
The Republicans think they have the perfect candidates. Right wing state Senator David Cappiello and Sean Sullivan, former commander of the Groton sub base to take on Chris Murphy(CT-05) and Joe Courtney(CT-02) respectively. Republicans in the words of state party chairman Chris Healy say that Chris Murphy and Joe Courtney will take the country down the path of "economic ruin and military weakness". I guess this is opposed to the Republicans who want to destroy programs for the elderly and children to pay for tax breaks to billionaires and continue the Iraq War for another 20 years.
I really am not too worried about our two freshmen in Connecticut. They both were able to take down popular moderate Republicans and have already raised about $1 million between the two of them. I just hope that they realize that they will have to fight back and not be caught surprised the way Democrat Sam Gejdenson did in 2000 when he was defeated by Rob Simmons in CT-02. Cappiello especially should give Murphy a lot of fodder for attack ads as he is already talking about Social Security cuts and more tax breaks for billionaires.
