First of all...hats off to (George Washington) Kos for rallying the troops. This is a struggle that will involve losses as well as wins.
Having said that our proxy's in Washington still cannot frame the Iraq debate and instead cede the argument to the Republicans.
Apparently, there are two rationales for this spinal challenge--
- Fear that they will be seen as weak by the Military and subsequently suffer at the polls.
- Do not have the numbers to override a presidential veto and would rather keep their powder dry.
Let's help em out...
We need to help our politicians find a clear, succinct narrative.
How about...
this misbegotten, ill-conceived war began on false pretenses and was poorly prosecuted by this administration.
Our valiant soldiers won battle after battle. However, they were neither equipped nor prepared for a long insurgency. (We were supposed to be drawing down forces within the year, right?)
The White House has consistently chosen to ignore military leadership recommendations while only notionally supporting the troops (not providing adequate armor and medical care).
The House and Senate are not trying to micromanage the war but to urge the President to listen to our military leaders and the people.
The war, or rather the objectives of this "preventive" war is/are lost. We can be big enough to accept the consequences of our actions.
We will not be bringing peace, prosperity or democracy to Iraq--ever.
We should repeat the message..
George Bush and his Republican supporters have lost the war. We need to provide adult supervision to save our troops, treasure, and international reputation. --Not tomorrow, but today!!!
