After reading '50 Easy Ways to Fight the Right' or whatever that little book was called, I chose to sign up for the alerts from Concerned Women For America (bleah) so that I could be alerted to do the opposite of what they were recommending. After about 8 months I've finally started receiving messages. The latest one said that if activists didn't speak up now, abstinence-only education funding would expire.
Hot dog! I thought! Something I can actually do that I didn't know I could do! Here is some info from the message:
House Energy and Commerce Chairman John Dingell (D-Michigan) plans to kill Title V funding by not reauthorizing it by the June 30 deadline. Politically, liberals hope abstinence education stays under the radar screen because their constituents want this funding to die so they can fund a broader approach to sex education. Their approach flies in the face of a recent Zogby poll which found that 78% of parents feel that sex education should place a greater emphasis on abstinence education rather than on contraception.
If Title V is not reauthorized before the June 30 deadline, not only will we lose funding for abstinence programs, but just as importantly, the definitions and guidelines that govern all of the federal abstinence dollars. It is absolutely essential that your Representatives hear from you now! They need to know that their constituents believe that abstinence is the only sure way to avoid sexually transmitted diseases and that "condoms as candy" is a bad recipe for our children.
So, if we have any energy left after the depressing Iraq funding bill, maybe we can ask our reps to be sure this abstinence-only sex education baloney is not reauthorized. If CWFA is for Title V funding, I'm agin it!
Hope this is useful to someone, and feel free to correct my tags if I've messed them up.
