I'm becoming a little concerned. I understand and support the need for a strong defense, probably more than most Democrats, yet some of the rumbling going on right now is a little scary.
Last week, Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed concern over the Bush administration's plans to build a"missile defence shield" at least part of which would be situated in Eastern Europe. Putin announced that he would retarget a portion of Russia's missiles on Europe should the U.S. decide to go through with these plans. Russia's views on this idea were reiterated in Seoul when Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that the missile shield, purportedly built to protect against rogue states such as Iran and North Korea did not reflect military reality.
Today I read that China has weighed in, saying Bush's plans "are not conducive to mutual trust between major powers and may cause new proliferation problems".
All of this, of course, comes on the eve of the G-8 summit.
Do we really, really need to spend time pissing off the rest of the world right now?
If we had any credibility in the world, and didn't owe China a butt load of money, this could have easily been approached quietly a deal struck where all the nations take part (and share in the wealth of building it, which I suspect is part of the drive for its' construction) and maybe we would actually begin building alliances again.
We're mired in two wars and now want to start an arms race in Europe and possibly Asia. Ask Napoleon and Hitler what happens when you fight multi front wars.
