President Bush, having just been slapped by both popular opinion and his own party, keeps pushing the interests of his corporate masters - now embarking on a "personal appeal" to persuade Republicans to resurrect and pass his immigration bill (S1348) to grant amnesty to 12 million illegal immigrants.
Bush "will talk about the fact that immigration reform is too important to let this opportunity pass, and this is the best opportunity that we have had in decades to reform the broken immigration system," said Scott Stanzel, a White House spokesman, in an AP report. "I'll see you at the bill signing," Bush predicted yesterday.
Say what you will about the Republicans, a good portion of them can still smell a can of shit when it's handed to them. It was Republicans who said "enough is enough" last week when all but seven of them blocked a Democratic effort to put the amnesty bill on a fast track to passage. Now Senate Democratic leaders have taken time to pull the cocks out of their mouths to write Bush, saying it is up to him to lean on Republicans to back the measure. Wow. Remember when Democrats used to be the ones sticking up for working Americans? Guess that they, like the Catholic Church, just need those Mexican votes too much to keep paying lip service to the well-being of legal American workers.
Of course S1348 will eventually be passed. Our Corporate Feudal Lords won't have it any other way. But in all this, there's a twisted irony that it was Republicans (Republicans!) who for once championed the interests of working legal Americans. Don't know if we'll ever see that again, but it's amazing we're seeing it now. As for the Democrats, well, they can go see La Raza for the money they won't be getting from us. I'm sure those racists will be very generous.
