This is the very first time I have written a diary so please be patient.
This morning I was eating breakfast with my mother. I was reading the newspaper when I came across an article on Steven Spielberg endorsing Hillary Clinton over Barack Obama after months of posturing between both candidates. I told her that Spielberg was going to endorse Obama when Bill Clinton called and practically seduced Spielberg into endorsing Hillary. I also told her there would be other major endorsements from other politicians including a most recent one from our Senator, Robert Menendez. She was angry because Spielberg being the father of two adopted African American children who would be proud to see and African American man win the nomination.
That being said, I was taken aback by the next few words out of her mouth. She said if Hillary was the nominee she would vote for Fred Thompson if he won the Republican nomination. Although she supported Clinton through the impeachment follies nine years ago, her opinion of Hillary has changed. She believes Hillary stayed with him for political purposes and to broaden her political agenda. I tried to reason to her about Thompson and his conservative agenda and what will happen to the Supreme Court and the environment. Her answer? "I'm at an age where I have to worry about myself," she said. "I don't have any grandchildren so the future doesn't involve me. I don't want my taxes raised anymore." This is coming from an African American woman over 65 who would be in the demographic that would vote for Hillary. She has NEVER voted for a Republican.
I have my own feelings about Hillary. Come November 2008, I'll either vote for her reluctantly or vote for the down ticket (we have a Senate race in 2008) and leave the Presidential vote blank. But you can see why I'm torn. I understand my mother's feelings; however, I don't think this country's future would be in the right hand if we have four more years of GOP rule. I wish the Democrats would think twice before nominating Hillary because I see more marginal non-ideological voters like my mother who will not vote for Hillary under any circumstance.
