Welcome to the Round-The-Clock Anti-Lieberman Fundraiser for Tom Allen, the Democratic Candidate for Senate from Maine!
Tonight, Joe Lieberman is hosting a $3,000-a-plate fundraiser for Republican Senator Susan Collins of Maine. A so-called "bi-partisan" fundraiser. (Silly me, I thought you needed a DEMOCRAT for that.)
Well, we’re going to fundraise for her opponent, Congressman and Kossack Tom Allen for the next 24 hours to help elect a great progressive voice from Maine. His victory in 2008 will not only strengthen our majority, but consign Joe Lieberman to political irrelevance. We’re going to remind Joe and his friends the Republicans what people-power can do.
We’ve got some great diarists lined up, so please join the fun, and donate to Tom Allen!
Starting ActBlue Total for Tom Allen: $8,597
Here’s today’s schedule of Round-The-Clock diarists with links to their DailyKos pages.
We organized yesterday here. If you’d like to participate, please reply to me below.
ON WITH THE FUN!
This is Tom Allen. Today, you’re going to hear a lot about his progressive record as a Congressman from Maine, from his vote against the authorization of military force in Iraq and against the supplemental funding bill, to his support of stem cell research. Tom Allen is a truly progressive Democrat, and he will make a wonderful addition to the Senate. We need his voice, his vote. Maine deserves some Democratic representation in the Senate!
But I'm not going to tell you about Tom Allen just yet. Right now, I'm going to tell you about his opponent, Susan Collins, and her best friend, Joe Lieberman.
Susan and Joe
Susan Collins and Joe Lieberman go way back, so it's no surprise that he should help her remain in the Senate. To illustrate their friendship, I have prepared a brief cartoon.
| Lieberman and Collins are the ranking members on the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee. Back in early 2006, when Lieberman still pretended to be a Democrat, he railed against the Senate's inability to investigate FEMA’s failure during and after Hurricana Katrina. Maybe he should have asked his friend Collins, Chairwoman of the Senate committee above which is in charge of looking into such governmental failures. Yet in January 2007, one week after being sworn in as the Chairman of that very committee, Lieberman refused to press the investigation. He’s too buddy-buddy with the Republicans to get mad at them for letting innocent people die. Link to image |
| They also share a prominent and unpopular position of supporting the war. Lieberman even wants to go one further and attack Iran! Whether or not Collins herself wants more servicemen and women to die in Bush’s folly in the Middle East, she certainly isn’t doing much to speak out against Lieberman’s repeated calls for military escalation. | Now, of course, the political tide has turned, and Collins is running desperate to save her career. Who should step in as her knight in shining armor? Her pal Joe, always willing to cross the aisle, help Republicans, and stab the Democratic Party in the back. Link to image |
It's a match made in political heaven. Too bad we'll have to break it up by helping to elect Tom Allen to the Senate and retiring Susan Collins.
Elect TOM ALLEN to the U.S. Senate!
Tom's already got tremendous support, both here on DailyKos and in the wider world of Democratic Politics. But you don't have to take my word for it -- just ask the man who got Joe voted out of the Democratic party, Ned Lamont, who wrote a great diary here about Tom! Or John Kerry and Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI), who are also helping to fundraise for Tom. Not to mention the good folks at MoveOn.org who are also involved in helping to elect the next Democratic Senator from Maine. Now, let's do our part here on DailyKos. With your efforts--and the support of people around the blogosphere from Turn Maine Blue to Blue Hampshire to MyleftNutmeg to AMERICAblog--let's help Tom Allen.
DONATE to Tom Allen via ActBlue, and watch the total rise throughout the day. In addition to his main page, there are three group pages to choose from, including one put together by our own mainefem and Turn Maine Blue. Go Tom Allen!
Join Tom Allen for a live online discussion on Iraq tonight at 6:30 EST. Tom will start responding to questions at 7 p.m.
