In light of Kos' recent front page stories rating candidates and opining that it's too early to choose one, it occured to me that it's by no means too early and that now is the time to be asking: why are you running for president?
I don't know why most of the candidates are running for the presidency.
I do, however, know why John Edwards is running. He has the fire in his belly to lead our nation out of the trainwreck of the Bush administration, and put us on the right track to peace and prosperity once again.
John understands that poverty is the single most important issue there is, and that poverty begets war, disease, destruction of our environment, and social decay. John understands the interconnections between these problems and the state of our nation and the world.
Poverty, unchecked, will only further the hideous path we are on in this country, and it will continue to destroy our world.
Edwards' plans to eliminate poverty, provide true universal healthcare, aid in rural recovery, create a meaningful energy policy, raise minimum wages, enact true fair trade policies, strengthen the middle class and unions and stop global warming not only serve our nation well, but the world too. These issues must be dealt with on a global level and John knows this.
We, as netrooters, owe it to ourselves and our country to be asking the question, why do these folks want to be our president? We need to know why and choose a candidate and support him with our entire beings. Never has it been more important, and now is not too early.
Dwight Eisenhower said it so well:
Whatever America hopes to bring to pass in the world must first come to pass in the heart of Americans.
(31 August 1959)
John Edwards knows this, understands this, and fights for it every day with a passion unmatched by any. This is why we must ask the question and demand the answer.
