Round-The-Clock Anti-Lieberman Fundraiser Part Eight! Hotlist

unpublished draft: will be deleted 15 days after Jun 21, 2007 if left unpublished.
This is the eighth diary in a 24-hour fundraiser for Tom Allen, Democratic Senate candidate from Maine.
In case you are just checking in, kath25 had the great idea to hold this fundraiser to help counteract the "bilateral" (ha!) fundraiser that Joe Lieberman is throwing for Susan Collins tonight. Lieberman’s fundraiser consists of a $3000/plate dinner for 150 guests. Apparently, Joe owes Sen. Collins a favor since she supported him in his Senate race in 2006. We’d like to accomplish two things – elect another progressive Democrat in the Senate by defeating Senator Collins in 2008, and let the Republicans know that by turning to Senator Lieberman for help they will actually be helping the Democrats.

Just some quick background: Congressman Allen has represented Maine’s first district since 1996. He is a progressive Democrat - you can see his voting record
here
He announced in May that he was going to run for Senator Collin’s Senate seat. Senator Collins, a Senator since 1996, has a reputation for being a moderate Republican and she can pick out some issues that separate her from other Republicans, (i.e. she’s pro-choice and she has a good record regarding civil rights), but Congressman Allen describes the differences between himself and Senator Collins during his live blog tonight at his website: http://tomallen.org/...
How much time do we have? She supported all of the Bush tax cuts for the super-wealthy, including total repeal of the estate tax. By moving billions of dollars to the very wealthy, she rubberstamped budget cuts for health care, education, environmental protection, Head Start, small business and community development. That is not an economic strategy that makes any sense for Maine. I could go on: the Cheney Energy Bill, Medicare D, the torture bill, the military commissions bill, fast track and Sam Alito. I think I should stop before my hands stiffen up!
I’ll stop now, and urge everyone who is able to contribute anything at all to a great Democratic candidate to visit actblue. Donations are much appreciated.
Thanks to all the other diarists who have written such excellent diaries today. Special thanks to kath25, who came up with this idea and contributed the great comics!
