Finally, at long last, we have a pollster who is willing to ask the question that many in the DKos community have asked for months, if not years.
Does the public really LACK the appetite for impeachment, as we have been told time and time again by every Republican flack and MSM pundit (often reading off the same cue cards)??
Well, according a new American Research Group poll on the subject, the public is...at worst...fifty-fifty. Follow me below the fold for the gist of it.
First, ARG polled on the Libby commutation by "The Decider." There, we see two-to-one opposition for the decision. THEN, they pulled out the big guns, polling on the issue of impeachment. The survey, which was conducted from July 3-5, found the following:
45% favor the idea of the House of Representatives beginning impeachment proceedings against President Bush...while 46% oppose.
54% favor the idea of the House of Representatives beginning impeachment proceedings against Vice-President Cheney...while only 40% oppose.
For those who get hung up on demographic breakdowns, the partisan breakdown favors Democrats, but only narrowly: 38% Dem, 33% Indie, 29% GOP.
In those breakdowns, some interesting info:
Dems favor Bush's impeachment by a 69-22 margin, but Independents also heavily favor Bush's impeachment by a wide margin (50-30).
Even one-in-six Republicans favor Cheney's impeachment.
Amazing numbers, and this should serve as something rather large to chew on for the "keep our powder dry" crowd....
UPDATE
Drudge has this poll as his lead, but the slapdick cannot help himself...the headline?? "Poll CLAIMS 45% support Bush impeachment". CLAIMS!!???!!! Geez, what an asshole...
Meanwhile, CNN has picked up the poll, but (typical MSM) ONLY the parts of the poll that dealt with the Scooter commutation. Can you believe that a poll exists showing a solid majority of American voters want the VP impeached, and the major news sources are going out of their way to ignore it? That, friends, is truly sad....
