What will it take to convince all Americans that we are not fighting for our freedom in Iraq nor that being there is making us safer? What will it take to convince all Americans that Saddam had nothing to do with 9/11 nor that he tolerated al Qaeda? What will it take to have all Americans question why Bush not only closed the Osama Unit of the CIA, but also has not caught him after six years? What will it take to convince all Americans that not only do anti-war advocates support our troops by wanting to bring them home promptly, but also support our troops by acknowledging the profoundly devastating daily realities of their lives as active members and vets?
What will it take to successfully explain to the ignorant masses that they should rethink their concerns about defunding the war as being tantamount to leaving our troops defenseless in a far away land? How can we explain to these same people that they have lowered the bar on Bush’s performance to such a great extent that their conclusion about defunding indicates that they have no faith that Bush would and could successfully redeploy our troops as needed? Do they not understand that blaming the Democrats for "defunding the troops" implies that the Democrats do not truly understand the depths of stupidity and incompetence of our commander-in-chief? If so, then why do these same ignorant masses believe a word that exits his defective orifice? Don't those who put their faith in Bush not wonder what happened to $9 billion of our tax dollars lost in Iraq reconstruction? If not, do you think they might give me some money with no need for repayment?
The media saturation of disinformation must be fought against or our fight to instill the various realities of our times into the minds of those brain-washed Americans will be nearly impossible to accomplish. I know most of us write letters to the editor, to news stations and to our representatives in government. Not only are our letters vast in number, but they also present logical arguments on how our country is being led down a path of destruction.
However, it seems to be very difficult to explain the obvious on extremely serious matters to those who have the ability to better spread the truth to the populace. Yet these are bright people who must understand the process of sound and valid premises leading to irrefutable conclusions. But they still refuse to fully get with the program to help us stop the madness. Instead, they remain part of the problem.
Even individuals who we think are allies make statements from which one can make inaccurate inferences. For example, Dana Milbank, who had me in hysterics with his orange, hunting gear outfit after Cheney’s "mishap", has subtlety insulted me in the guise of being "fair and balanced". He actually had the temerity to claim that the Democrats’ objection to Clinton’s charge of perjury and obstruction is morally equivalent to the Republicans’ opposition to Libby’s charge.
Don’t get me wrong, as most wing nuts would, I agree that no one should perjure themselves or obstruct justice. However, what Dana Milbank does not seem to understand is WHY there are those who did not care about Clinton’s perjury and obstruction of justice. We really didn’t care that he got a blowjob and lied about it. I mean hell, how many men in the world HAVEN’T done just that without suffering legal conseqences? So, yes, we agree that no one should lie under oath, but we also feel that Clinton should never have been placed under oath about getting a blowjob in the White House. If you remember, or care, Europeans thought we had lost our fucking minds in pursing this matter...at all.
To compare a president lying about getting a blowjob and its affect on the country to a person lying about committing treason and its affect on the country is staggeringly ludicrous. But those who get away with this lame comparison, and those that agree with it, cannot seem to grasp their asininity. And for those who are presumably one of our best allies in the media to betray our judgment in such an intellectually dishonest way nearly makes my head explode!
But I digress...
If writing, calling and directly speaking to those who are in the position to change the public narrative are not working effectively, then what else might we do? ClammyC has a great diary on this subject. Most of us have excluded boycotting advertisers because the low level employees will be the first, and most likely the only, ones affected. Boycotting the media sources probably won’t work because there is only a minority of us who seem to understand their mendacious broadcasting. It seems that we are only left with bitching about the sad state of affairs to the already converted, who can only try the aforementioned tactics to minimal effect.
I am not advocating giving up our attempts to change the narrative by writing, phoning, speaking, protesting, or by whatever other means presently at our disposal. Yet, we should not rely on the media or "friendly" government officials to assist us in getting the truth out. One of the best ways I have seen to directly inform a significant number of the ignorant is a bumper sticker that reads, "If you are not outraged, you’re not paying attention" As witty as this is, will the reader now go "pay attention" to FAUX News? I was hoping that my fellow kossacks could come up with bumper stickers, slogans and rejoinders (Obstruction of Justice is an excellent one thanks to Clammy) that are powerful, easily understood and to the point that can resonate with the masses who are being brainwashed daily by a powerful media and duplicitous representatives of government. If we can come up with a "support the troops" mantra of our own, we would have another means of getting more Americans to not only be aware of what truly is going on, but also to join us in our battle against the propaganda. I believe we can save our country, if we can continue to brainstorm, stick together and FIGHT!
