Although, there are some pictures of my hummingbird visitors in this diary, the diary reflects my thoughts on the way life hums along in our backyard whether we are present or not. Humans have a hard time conceptualizing a universe that does not include them. We really are guests of planet earth, rather nasty guests at times. We are the embodiment of the annoying relatives who announce a visit, stay far too long, wreck the joint and then don't offer to pay for damages.
In the 1950's, Americans were subject to countless "alien invasion" movies. Quite often, the alien visitors a bit arrogantly informed the humans that they had already been studied and were found to be rather simple and perhaps not overly bright. Of course, the "aliens" were just stand ins for the feared Soviets, who were imbued with less than human qualities. I have nothing against humans, I am one, some of my best friends are humans. I worry at times maybe the aliens were right.
Once when Mr.Undercovercalico was flying, the captain turned to him and said," I am worried about your soul, what would you do if the rapture happened right now.?" Mr.undercovercalico said," Well, you would be raptured and I would not so at least there would still be somebody to fly the plane. He thinks that the company should make sure a "rapture" Christian is always paired with a partner who is not, to avoid unnecessary plane crashes.
Even as I type, there is an entire world in my backyard functioning just beautifully without my company. There is life, death, struggle and triumph that unfolds in an endless rhythm.
In the winter, we put seeds in the feeder and on the railing so we have cheap TV just a window away. The seeds on the railing led to these simple but lovely beings...
I am not the only one who thinks so as one draws in the other...
Meanwhile the hummingbirds are at work. Hummingbirds are pretty aggressive even with one another, even though three or even four could settle on a feeder, it always leads to air strikes. They swarmed me furiously and then realizing I was not going to steal the food source settled into ignoring me.
There are also a few creatures that wait until night to come out and investigate.
I think this fellow is handsome. We think he is a spade footed toad. he was less than enthusiastic about being the subject of paparazzi. Apparently, not everybody in the world actually wants to be a celebrity. the last fellow, well, he seemed to be a bit of a loner and I can respect
that.
The mighty black panther thinks he can catch a hummingbird but we don't let him out until they are gone.
The universe is directly in front of us day and night, rain or shine, and I like the mystery of not knowing the ultimate purpose, my question is whether we are humbled and awed enough. We really cannot master it, we do not truly have dominion over our world and it is those who believe that who will help us destroy ourselves.
