I've got some questions for my fellow Kossaks, and for the front pagers here. Does only having one day to recommend a diary take away from some diaries here not making the recommended list when they deserve to be, and also take away from a diarist getting some recommends that they deserve if a lot of people really like a diary but find it too late? Does it make sense to put diaries on the rescued list with so little time to recommend them after they're posted much of the time? Also for the front pagers, if the site is going to move to a PHP format, when is that change going to occur, and is it coming soon enough that this question is a moot point since it wouldn't be worth messing with before the entire site changes? I'd also love to hear more about what the site will be like once it moves to a PHP format.
Case in point, I wrote a diary titled Weekly Standard Chickenhawk Called Out on C-SPAN on July 9th. Not long after that diary was written the You Tube video that I posted and linked up had gotten over 6000 views just from this site and well over 12,000 total. Yet the diary got an entire 20 people giving it a tip.
So my questions for everyone are....
Are we selling short every diary here that might be worth a chance to recommend by only having one day to recommend a diary? I can't tell you how often I go look at the rescued list, and really like a diary that has been rescued, only to find that the time has already run out to recommend it and there is no hope of that diary making it onto the recommended list when I think it deserves a spot there.
My personal thoughts are that one day is not enough, and it would be nice to give every diary here at least two or three days to see if they catch on and still allow people to recommend them. I feel the same way about the comments. I don't know what type of headache that would give the administrators of the site and if it would be possible or not. I also do not know when the new version of the site is going to roll out. I just thought this was a discussion worth having here.
I'm wondering if others here feel the same way? Have any of you read a diary that you would have liked to have recommend and been disappointed that you could not recommend it? Has anyone else here written a diary that they felt if given more time to be recommended it might have gotten noticed? Is anyone else besides myself interested in what the new format is going to be, getting more information about it, and knowing when that change is going to happen?
Thoughts welcomed and this is just one of those things where I'm not wanting to diss those who do all the hard work here of running the site by any means. I appreciate all the hard work that's been done to keep this site running and I put my money where my mouth is and signed up for the lifetime membership here to support the site. I'd just love to know how the current system came to be embraced, and if there's a better way to do things so really well written or important diaries don't end up going under the radar, or that someone who wrote a really great diary didn't get the short end of the stick and not get TU status because too many people found their diary a little too late to recommend it that would have liked to.
I have a little bit of a unique perspective on this since I got to see first hand the difference between a diary I wrote, and the direct amount of views to that video which were linked to this web site, and it kind of had me scratching my head. I'd love to hear others' thoughts on the subject, and if anyone has the skinny on when the wholesale changes to the site are coming, and what they're going to mean for how it looks and works.
