If you don’t live in Michigan, you may not have heard of Bruce Fealk. But you might have read his diary in which he mentioned in a recent newspaper article that he said of Congressman Joe Knollenberg (MI-09): "Knollenberg should atone for his sins" – meaning his refusal to back Democratic-sponsored legislation to set timetables for removing the troops – "like a good Catholic."
As it turns out, conservatives really don’t like discussing religion-when it’s used against them. Knollenberg was pissed beyond belief, even going so far as to call on our Governor to reprimand him. The RCCC, in a blatant show of hypocrisy,
said "Religious smears have no place in political discourse."
Of course the Republicans have never done that before, right?
So now our very own local conservatively biased newspaper, The Oakland Press has decided to bash Bruce for the very comments that they published:
Certainly these anti-war activists have a right to express their opinion. It’s just sad that they decided to take such a low road doing it.
The most recent incident involves Bruce Fealk of Rochester Hills, a member of MoveOn.org who, in a story to The Oakland Press, said Knollenberg should urge the US Senate to "vote the right way and atone for his sins as a good Catholic boy
The religious reference is uncalled for but unfortunately symptomatic of politics today.
Maybe we’re idealistic. Maybe we’re just downright naïve. But just because "dirty" politics is so prevalent doesn’t mean it’s right.
Funny, but I don’t recall an editorial from them when Bush said "Freedom is the Almighty God's gift to every person who lives in the world." Or when Republicans said "Liberals will ban the Bible."
If you’re as angry as I am about the hypocrisy of the conservatives, be sure to let The Oakland Press know how you feel. Write regardless of where you live, but if you live in Southeast Michigan, be sure to leave your name, address, and phone number so your letter will be published (they only publish local letters, but give them hell, anyway)! Send your emails to vop@oaklandpress.com.
Also consider giving money to Bruce’s website, http://www.retirejoeknollenberg.com . All proceeds go towards Knollenberg’s opponent come 2008.
