Hillary Clinton flew to West Virginia’s capital today, landing at Yeager Airport in Charleston and going in a motorcade to the Marriot Hotel in downtown for a fund raiser luncheon. She was met with great enthusiasm. One older gentleman speaking to news reporters after the event observed that he "was with Clinton all the way." Another attendee thought that Mrs. Clinton was running like an incumbent president.
Subsequently, the Senator visited West Virginia State University where she spoke to a standing only crowd of more than 700 people. Mrs. Clinton promised that when she is president, she will end the war in Iraq. And she called on the government in Iraq to step forward and start taking responsibility for their own security. She observed that she was working with West Virginia’s Senator Byrd to deauthorize the war.
Mrs. Clinton praised West Virginia’s commitment to pre-school education.
Mrs. Clinton has been polled leading potential Republican nominees Rudy Giuliani and John McCain in the Mountain State.
