For those who don't know, Jon Carroll is a columnist for the San Francisco Chronicle. I can hardly properly characterize his work here except to say that overall he's one of the good guys. So, I was just reading today's column.
The general theme of the column is meeting people at parties and not remembering who they are. And he talks about a particular party:
Recently I went to a very large party, a party significantly above my pay grade.
Anyway, the final three paragraphs seem very topical and I reproduce them without comment for your delectation:
At the same party I ran into Nancy Pelosi. When she became speaker of the House, an event I generally applauded, I wrote a column saying that I thought her four-day preinaugural celebration of herself was perhaps a little much, given the situation. Just thought it would be good to keep the Democrats in line.
I wondered if she remembered. I am but a local columnist, and she has many things on her mind. We shook hands. I looked into her eyes. Oh, she remembered. Had I not been in the way, her gaze would have set the bush behind me on fire. Or the Bush behind me, had there been a Bush behind me.
So a big shout-out to Nancy Pelosi, super-gaze woman. At least I remembered who she was. Maybe next time we can talk about FISA. I have a few issues.
