McConnell can't like this bit of news:
Democratic Congressman Ben Chandler, appearing for a taping of “Kentucky Newsmakers” would not completely shut the door on a possible challenge to U.S. Senator Mitch McConnell next year. Chandler indicated that’s not the direction he’s pointing right now, but said he’s learned not to rule anything out.
In a wide ranging interview, Chandler criticized the conduct of the war in Iraq, what he calls the secrecy of the FAA and indicated he’s open to possible revenue enhancements to take care of troubled bridges and roads in America.
"Revenue enhancements"? Call it what you will, we certainly need to pay to fix our troubled infrastructure, and that won't happen with Bush's tax cuts still in place.
In any case, this is thin gruel upon which to hang our hopes that the popular Chandler makes this an immediate top-tier race. And Chandler hasn't distinguished himself with honor on FISA or any of the Iraq withdrawal bills. But if there was a time to provide a clear contrast with the unpopular Senate Minority Leader on Iraq and protecting our Constitution, it sure as heck is now.
Again, everything I've heard is that Chandler is bidding his time for 2010, where he can run against the senile Bunning or an open seat -- a much easier proposition. But you've got the believe that Schumer and the DSCC are promising the sun and the moon to get him in the race this year.
