Yes, I know it is Sunday, but the slice was yesterday. I decided to go visit one of my favorite areas of town and amble on over to the Memphis Farmer's Market located in the pavilion behind the central train station. By the time I left, it was well over ninety degrees and I looked like a sweaty lunatic taking shots. A concerned looking board member attached to the farmer's market summoned me and talked to me in the soft tones reserved for the potentially disturbed. He relaxed when he realized I was just a meandering hobby type intended to do no harm to the reputation of the farmer's market.
The irony of driving into the city from a semi-rural area to go to a farmer's market did not escape me, but I knew many of the small organic farmers in my area go there and my area is dominated by one very large family farm that I patronize and I wanted to see who else was trying to make a living.
It wasn't a large market but it had a friendly, cheery vibe.
There were plenty of pretty flowers and tasty food products to buy.
I did not buy the bread. I have a tendency to have a million different kinds of bread and cheese on hand. I prefer it to crack. My waistline, yeah, less so.
Who says Memphians are just a bunch of anti-progressive shredded pork eaters, huh?
They even had entertainment. I did not buy a CD but I donated in the empty guitar case. How can you have a farmer's market without a folk singer?
Unicycle man looks a little fierce because he thought I was stalking him. Technically, I was but only to get a picture of he and his friends in action not to take his transport.
My persistence was rewarded.
Memphians also just like to hang out and chat with one another.
Just outside of the market there was a complimentary pet sitting service.
The poodle was named "Waverly", he was friendly but I had no air conditioning or treats to offer.
I ended up buying some lavender goat's milk soap, fresh corn and jalapeño peppers for a salsa, for dinner and an official Memphis farmer's Market t shirt.
The Memphis Farmer's Market is located in the historic South Main district downtown and I took so many pictures I ended up with enough material for two diaries, so I will offer up a modest look at the building in the South Main district tomorrow. As a kid, our family tradition was to go to the farmer's market on Saturdays, I thoroughly enjoyed my visit and hope y'all liked a few of the pictures.
