Yesterday I put out a diary because a man in spotslyvania Virginia shot his 13 year old daughter in the head.
the story:
.BY ELLEN BILTZThirteen-year-old Kayla Reynolds was arguing about bad checks with her father early yesterday when the subject turned to drugs. Moments later, the Spotsylvania County teenager was dead on the front porch from a gunshot wound to the head, her pregnant half-sister was bleeding from a bullet to her face, and her uncle was calling police while her father drank a couple of beers....."Hague said he saw Reynolds take out his pistol and shoot both girls in the head.
Here is why I think this is a Woman's rights issue.
MURDER. Every day four women die in this country as a result of domestic violence, the euphemism for murders and assaults by husbands and boyfriends. That's approximately 1,400 women a year, according to the FBI. The number of women who have been murdered by their intimate partners is greater than the number of soldiers killed in the Vietnam War.
Every DAY, my god this statistic has not changed since the 1970's, Why?
would he have raised a gun on his son? Most likely NOT.
Why are we still being killed by our spouses? Why is NO ONE talking about this on the campaign trail?
Every Day................... don't we value ourselves more that this?
Bear with me here I am not an eloquent writer, and my spelling is even worse. i wish one of you who did write so beautifully would pick up this issue
From the FBI:
Violence Against Women in the United States
BATTERING. Although only 572,000 reports of assault by intimates are officially reported to federal officials each year, the most conservative estimates indicate two to four million women of all races and classes are battered each year. At least 170,000 of those violent incidents are serious enough to require hospitalization, emergency room care or a doctor's attention.
SEXUAL ASSAULT. Every year approximately 132,000 women report that they have been victims of rape or attempted rape, and more than half of them knew their attackers. It's estimated that two to six times that many women are raped, but do not report it. Every year 1.2 million women are forcibly raped by their current or former male partners, some more than once.
THE TARGETS. Women are 10 times more likely than men to be victimized by an intimate. Young women, women who are separated, divorced or single, low- income women and African-American women are disproportionately victims of assault and rape. Domestic violence rates are five times higher among families below poverty levels, and severe spouse abuse is twice as likely to be committed by unemployed men as by those working full time. Violent attacks on lesbians and gay men have become two to three times more common than they were prior to 1988.
IMPACT ON CHILDREN. Violent juvenile offenders are four times more likely to have grown up in homes where they saw violence. Children who have witnessed violence at home are also five times more likely to commit or suffer violence when they become adults.
IMPACT ON HEALTH AND SOCIAL SERVICES. Women who are battered have more than twice the health care needs and costs than those who are never battered. Approximately 17 percent of pregnant women report having been battered, and the results include miscarriages, stillbirths and a two to four times greater likelihood of bearing a low birth weight baby. Abused women are disproportionately represented among the homeless and suicide victims. Victims of domestic violence are being denied insurance in some states because they are considered to have a "pre-existing condition."
We outnumber them ladies, did you know that? According to a United nations stat
United States of America 2007
Total: 305,826.2
Women: 155,318.2
Men: 150,508.0
Technical notes:
Projections of the total population and population by sex are prepared by the Population Division of the United Nations Secretariat and revised every two years in order to incorporate new data. The preparation of projections involves two distinct processes: (a) the incorporation of all relevant information regarding past demographic dynamics of the population of each country or area of the world; and (b) the formulation of detailed assumptions about the future paths of fertility, mortality, and international migration.
The medium variant projections for 2007 refer to 1 July of the given year and assume the following: Total fertility in all countries eventually converges toward a level of 1.85 children per woman by the end of the projection period (2005-2050). However, not all countries reach this level during the projection period. The basic principle of the fertility projection is the same for all countries, but projection procedures are slightly different depending on whether countries had a total fertility above or below 1.85 children per woman in 2000-2005. Mortality is projected on the basis of models of change of life expectancy that produce smaller gains the higher the life expectancy already reached. The selection of the model for each country is based on recent trends in life expectancy by sex. For the 60 countries highly affected by the HIV/AIDS epidemic, estimates of the impact of HIV/AIDS are made by explicitly modeling the course of the epidemic and by projecting the yearly incidence of HIV infection. International migration is projected on the basis of past international migration estimates and an assessment of the policy stance of countries with regard to future international migration flows.
In the case of official national statistics compiled through the Demographic Yearbook system, the total, female and male population refer to the population enumerated at the most recent census for which data are available.
The sex ratio is calculated as the number of females per 100 males.
And even though there are 1.3 women to every 1 man, we are talking about Cleavage. And whether Hillary is Agressive or Assertive. WTF.
We out number them and we are being killed at alarming rates, every day. I wonder if the man who shot his daughter would have picked up the gun so fast on another man, all his life he has been taught to fear otehr men. What was he taught a bout women?
Women are object? to be sought and possesed?
In some middle eastern countries it is not only acceptable to rape women, it is considered an HONOR for them to have been raped.
1 According to the most respected study of rape victimization, 12.1 million living adult American women
have been victims of forcible rape. National Victim Center and Crime Victims Research and Treatment
Center, Rape in America: A Report to the Nation (April 1992), p. 2.
Of the 120 men studies had they committed 483 rapes of women they knew. None of these rapes was ever reported.
EVER
From another Blog:
The private war of women soldiers. "Last year, Col. Janis Karpinski caused a stir by publicly reporting that in 2003, three female soldiers had died of dehydration in Iraq, which can get up to 126 degrees in the summer, because they refused to drink liquids late in the day. They were afraid of being raped by male soldiers if they walked to the latrines after dark."

this never made the news.
In my state Both the govenor Martin O'Malley and his Attorney General Doug Gansler Ran on platforms that included reform of the Terrible Family court system here, and women's rights. In Maryland if you report the rape by your exhusband and it comes up in the custody hearings It is held against YOU, not him. If you ahve a peace or protective order, the court may ignore that and leave you alone in a room with him. I guess that is just for fun. If you have a history of domestic violence and his lawyer is higher paid than your lawyer, you will lose your children. If you are continually threatened, stalked, and harrased throughout the peace order, the State of maryland will refuse to prosecute, the police will refuse to come to your house, and nothing will happen until he tries to kill you. the state INTENTIONALLY leaves these women so abandoned, and alone that some of them run, with their children in fear for their lives.
Then the state steps in and ARRESTS the victim. After all she is keeping precious away form a good daddy right? Ugh
I can not find one thing Martin O'Malley has done to fulfill his promise to make changes around these issues.
Doug Gansler Nothing either.
They use us, that is all
they use us to get elected, then do nothing.
It is time we did for ourlseves, I kept this poem on my mirror for years to remind me that I am in charge of my life
Poetry Thursday/ Grateful Thursday!
After Awhile
After a while you learn the subtle difference
Between holding a hand and chaining a soul,
And you learn that love doesn't mean leaning
And company doesn't mean security,
And you begin to learn that kisses aren't contracts
And presents aren't promises
And you begin to accept your defeats
With your head up and your eyes open,
With the grace of a woman,
Not the grief of a child
And you learn to build all your roads on today,
Because tomorrow's ground is too uncertain for plans
and futures have a way of falling down in mid-flight.
After awhile you learn that even sunshine
Burns if you get too much
So you plant your own garden and decorate your own soul,
In stead of waiting for someone to bring you flowers
And you learn that you really can endure...
That you really are strong
And you really do have worth,
and you learn and learn...
With every good bye you learn.
