Quick diary here.
It seems like whenever someone, for whatever reason, expresses the opinion that "if Hillary gets the nomination, I'm not voting for her in the general", a hundred Kossacks leap out of the woodwork to say things like "then you support a Republican Presidency" or "President Romney thanks you".
But ya know what? No. It's not the same thing.
Suppose 100 people vote before you. The results are tied 50-50. If you vote for Hillary, then the results are 51-50, and she wins. If you vote for the Republican, then the results are 50-51, and he wins. But if you don't vote, or vote third party, the results either remain 50-50, or become 50-50-1. You have not helped Hillary Clinton, but you have not hurt her, either. You are not helping Hillary or the Republican in any way. You have simply not affected the outcome.
I think it's important to remember that, as Democrats, and as Americans, we have the great responsibility and obligation to support individuals we believe would best represent our interests. Voting for someone you don't respect or trust just because they have a (D) next to their name does not reflect a Democratic process worth fighting for. If those of us who oppose Hillary all vote for her anyway, and she wins an overwhelming majority, then we're essentially saying "this is who we consider to be the ideal candidate -- please give us more like her." That's not the message I'd like to send.
Full disclosure: I myself haven't decided what to do if Hillary Clinton gets the nomination. Yes, like many here, I'm leaning toward abstaining from voting in that particular race, or voting third party. But whether you respect this choice or not, the accusation that not voting for Clinton is "the same" as voting Republican is extremely insulting, and mathematically inaccurate. Just because I didn't adopt a kitten tonight doesn't mean I killed one.
