Attorney General Alberto Gonzales finally announced his resignation today after meeting with the president at his ranch in Crawford Texas. This time there was no "spend time with family" excuse given. The reasons for his departure were obvious to everyone except the president. The presidents reaction after the jump.
"His good name was dragged through the mud for political reasons," Bush added in a brief statement to reporters.
Oh well. The vice president is expected to announce that this resignation along with the departure of Karl Rove demonstrates once and for all that the Bush administration really is in its last throes. Pardon my cynicism but haven't we heard this before? The question now is what should be done with Gonzales? Should the Congress continue to question him about his part in the U.S. Attorney firings? I think it is time for the Congress to move on to more important business like the impeachment of Cheney and Bush. But Gonzales still needs to be dealt with and I have a suggestion. First as the president's counsel, then as Attorney General, Gonzales launched an all out assault on the Constitution of the United States. This was his biggest crime. Since it is the duty of the president to "protect and defend" the Constitution from all enemies foreign and domestic, it is incumbent upon the president to have Gonzales designated "an illegal enemy combatant". Given the sometimes tenuous relationship we have with the government of Pakistan in the GWOT, Gonzales should be arrested and extremely renditioned to Pakistan where he can be given a true appreciation for human rights.
