"Goodbye, good riddance
Here is the more extended release dealing with replacing Gonzo.
Chapel Hill, North Carolina – Senator John Edwards released the following statement following the announcement of the resignation of Attorney General Alberto Gonzales. Edwards has repeatedly called for Gonzales to resign, the first time on March 13, 2007.
"Americans across the country have been calling for months for Alberto Gonzales to resign, and now, the man who oversaw a political purge of U.S. Attorneys at the Justice Department, approved torture techniques at Guantanamo Bay and approved illegal spying on Americans has stepped down -- this is a victory for all of us.
"The truth is Alberto Gonzales should have resigned months ago. While this news is 'better late than never,' the fight is far from over. Now is the time for a new direction. Instead of replacing him with another political insider, we need to make sure that President Bush replaces him with someone who is essentially nonpolitical, highly qualified, competent, independent and who will protect our civil liberties and the Constitution. That's what the Justice Department needs, particularly in the aftermath of Gonzales
and just to make this somewhat of a news diary. Edwards' remarks on the Petraeus report.
Chapel Hill, North Carolina – Speaking today at a town hall event in Manchester, New Hampshire, Senator John Edwards made the following comments about General Petraeus' upcoming report on the success of President Bush's decision to send additional U.S. troops to Iraq earlier this year.
"I believe there was a mandate from the American people in the last election to make George Bush end this war," said Edwards. "Congress needs to stand its ground and should not send a single funding bill to the president that doesn't have a timetable for withdrawal – every bill. They also, in September, should use every single tool – including a filibuster – to ensure that no bill goes to the president without a timetable for withdrawal."
Edwards continued: "This isn't about politics, this is life and death. We have men and women whose lives are on the line in Iraq and George Bush is not going to change course unless he is forced to. We need the Congress to have courage and backbone and stand their ground and make George Bush change course."
Senator Edwards has called for an immediate reduction of 40,000 to 50,000 troops to stop the surge and get all regional parties to begin to find a political solution, for a diplomatic offensive with all regional parties, and for all combat troops to be withdrawn within the next year.
He used his last day on the road in NH to talk about Veterans care.
Manchester, NH – Today, the Edwards family will conclude their four-day 'Fighting for One America' bus tour across New Hampshire. Senator John Edwards discussed his bold plan to end the war in Iraq and improve medical care and the disability claims process for veterans.
"Elizabeth and I really enjoyed this tour and thank the people of New Hampshire for their hospitality," Edwards said. "This was a great opportunity to talk to people across the state and to ask for their support in this effort to bring about the real change our country needs.
"We need to change course in our foreign policy and end the war in Iraq and bring our soldiers home to the hero's welcome they deserve," Edwards continued. "That includes honoring the 'Sacred Contract' we have with our soldiers and veterans to provide them with the best possible medical care and process for providing disability benefits."
There are currently about 140,000 veterans living in New Hampshire. 171 have been wounded and 19 killed in Iraq from New Hampshire.
Edwards continues to drive the Democratic agenda with his specific ideas to transform our country. While Washington continues to offer only rhetoric, empty talk and half-measures, Edwards is offering courage, conviction and bold ideas to build one America.
