I am listening to Ed Schultz and he is railing about the new Nafta issue with truckers from Mexico delivering to destinations in the US and vice versa....big issue. Part 2 of the Dubai Ports deal aimed at eliminating the strongest remaining union in the US, the Longshoremen's Union.

But that isn't the real problem we face...it is what I've been trying to communicate for the past several months...not only here but with my Local Democratic party. As Ed says, why aren't the candidates speaking out on this?
YES,,,EXACTLY...WHY?

In my humble opinion, it is because nobody wants to strike out and enter new territory.

The Dems, in short, have let the Republicans and the "Lieberal" (read neocon) Media define the issues for us.

Yes, I know they have not defined Global Warming or Iraq----except they have.
We are being out-maneuvered.

Richardson makes another gaffe because he is responding to a Republican talking point. Instead of turning the tables and demanding to focus on what is important, he is trying, oh so hard, to appeal to those "Moderate" Republicans by proclaiming his faith.

Once again the Dems are being caught up in issues of "faith", "right to life", "gay marriage", "support the troops" and "climate change"--is it or isn't it?

Once again the Dems are trying to appeal to the mythical "Moderate" Republicans. We don't want to turn them off that is why you can't exercise your right to "Freedom of Speech" and carry your signs. We all need to dress in Blue and wave flags and "support the troops" but no other signs are allowed. They'll kick all the Dems out of the parade.
My issue is why not? let them kick us out of a parade. Then we can sue the community for violation of free speech!!!!

At this point, a person is either anti NeoCon or not. The Dems are not going to "recruit" anyone like they are anticipating. They are only going to take advantage of a backlash. Republicans are calling themselves "Independents" now, or even "Libertarians" so as to distance themselves from Bush and his failed vision thing. Racism is rampant. Prejudice is the soup du jour. We have the worst health and healthcare system. The economy is tanking. Our Bill of Rights is trashed. Our courts have been hijacked. Our military has been destroyed. And China owns us....yet the Dems are going after those mythical "Moderates".

What we need to do and what the candidates need to do is get their stand on the important issues out there.
Whenever some "plant" asks a Republican talking point issue squash them. Say, instead, my position on that issue has been made clear, now I want to discuss something important for all of us....and then bring out Healthcare, the economy, jobs, Dubai Ports,Nafta, mining sfety, quality control, FEMA, or any of the hundreds of things the Republicans don't want brought to the front. They want to pretend that God, Gay Marriage, and Gold is all that is important. We need to change the dialog back to warrantless wiretapping, freedom of speech, voting rights, and what is wrong with a little socialism anyway???? Our ancestors worked very hard for Unions and Social Security. A healthy, educated, fearless, free speaking society is a strong society. Let's speak out and get rid of Republican talking points. Let's take over the "conversation" and let them bury themselves in triviality. All they want is polarization anyway.

Thanks for letting me rant once again. I just love freedom of Speech.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

The Jena six story...and I read that in Ireland Black students can't get into the Dublin Elemantary schools.  It is not just against black or brown but also against perceived black/brown religions.  So much more than just a few years ago.

      •  Anti-ILLEGAL Immigration Is Not Racism (0+ / 0-)

That's just people who are in favor of illegal immigration playing the race card.

You're not one of those dishonest people who answer, "I oppose illegal immigration" with "What have you got against MIGRANTS?", are you?

Because THAT--issuing a charge of racism where clearly none is warranted--is anti-white racism, the assumption that every opinion a white person has that has anything to do with brown people must, with no other possibility, be rooted in bigotry.

The Jena Six is just disgusting, absolutely stomach-turning, but it IS very localized.

The real issue is that the Democrats lack the same media apparatus as the right. They haven't been able to intimidate mainstream media outlets into providing positive coverage the way the right has been able to do over time. For years the right was able to complain about the "liberal media" to the point where press coverage has become not only neutral, but downright favorable to their issues. Networks now bend over backwards to "appear fair" by attacking Democrats.

While Air America is a start, the left still lacks its own media. It doesn't have the same presence that the right has in talk radio. It doesn't have its own cable network like Fox. It lacks that media presence to advance its own agenda and viewpoints. Because of that they can't set the agenda.

The other issue is that the Democrats lack the think tanks, foundations, direct mail firms, PR firms, and other organizations to advance their viewpoints. From reading the Republican Noise Machine the Heritage Foundation has staff passing information to the media 24/7. They have staff working all day and pushing out press releases. They also have their "experts" appearing on TV networks all the time.

That is why the Democrats are always at a disadvantage. In the 1980s and 1990s, when the right was building these organizations, the Democrats were asleep at the wheel. While the Center for American Progress is a start, it is still a long way off from being as powerful as the Heritage Foundation.

    •  They lack unity. (0+ / 0-)

That is why they are Democrats. But I agree with you in everything.

is that they don't know how to stay on message, let alone create the "Democratic message". The Republicans are able to crystallize their positions in very short soundbites. They can crystallize their position into one or two brief sentences.

On the other hand the Democrats create complicated paragraphs. They can't say their positions in soundbites. They suck at marketing.

  •  Besides, it was not much of an issue until recent (0+ / 0-)

ly....Illegals have always been here, in all races and colors...to make it an issue now is just playing the fear card and the race card. There are a lot of "illegal" immigrant descendants whose parents came in from Canada and got stamped "Citizen" as they crossed the border into the US. And that was just in the 1920s. To not see the racism inherent in this contoversy is just fooling yourself. It is all racist.
