The Chicago Tribune reports today that Rep. Weller has extensive land investments in Nicaragua, which are not fully listed in documents that he is required to file.  More below:

In addition, he was a major supporter of the Central American Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA) vote in the house.  That bill, according to the Trib, had a provision that provided legal protection for American investors, like Weller.  Clearly a conflict of interest along with shady investments.

Weller represents the 11th district here in Illinois and has managed to hold on to his seat by typically nasty campaign tactics.  I think with this scandal his seat is now, finally, a good bet for a democratic pick up.  This story needs more national press, beyond Chicago.

This is just another example of the GOP implosion from a record of arrogance and greed.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

He's like an impacted tooth rotting in place. And he's been that way for 30 or more years.

For more on Weller's abuse of power, check out the article the Trib did on his ties to a phone-sex baron and campaign contributor, Jeffery Prosser. Acting in an official capacity, Weller personnaly went to Belize and HAND-DELIVERED a letter to the Belizean prime minister on Prosser's behalf.

Hmmm, the Trib article is nowhere to be found, but you can read the background here:

The sad thing is he was opposed by one of the best of the new Democratic candidates, John Pavich.

This part of the state is the as Red as it comes.Anyone living here knows it. The Dems need a guy who can and wants to win.....Im a Reg Democrat and got nothing from the Dem running last time.....I did get a Weller frank in the mail.

    •  I thought Pavich was a great candidate! (0+ / 0-)

Young, but lots of foreign affairs experience. He showed real leadership skills and was remarkably lucid for a politician (perhaps too lucid). I have no idea how he ran his campaign. I assume it was on a shoestring budget since he had no help from the netroots. I believe his brother was his campaign manager.

      •  I hope he wasnt "great" (0+ / 0-)

        since he lost by 10%.

I cant tell you much about his race since he sent me nothing and frankly I had to look up who was running on the Net since I hadnt even see a sign till the last few weeks.

IMHO the DNC wrote off my district long ago.......and thats why Weller keeps winning.

This is one guy who should not be in Congress. With any luck the powers that be in the netroots will put his name at the top of the list. I don't think his district is too happy with his marriage to the daughter of a former genocidal Guatemalan dictator.

          •  Do you live in his district? (0+ / 0-)

I don't think his district is too happy with his marriage to the daughter of a former genocidal Guatemalan dictator

Im guessing you dont because all of that was out before he won last time.

It was all over the news last time....but a year later i doubt many took notice.

In fact I would bet good money that if I asked 10 people on the street who hes married to...No more than 1 would know the answer.

Beginning with boosting Democrats' morale in the district . . .

I'm sure it will be possible to find people who aren't quite so negative about absolutely everything. Seriously, you obviously don't care, so why trash a man who was, in fact, a very good candidate?

              •  Oh wake up (0+ / 0-)

The man did little to win. IE....didnt get his name out there.......didnt or couldnt get his record out there.

I didnt trash him I did say I hope he wasnt the Democrats greatest.

Seriously you dont seem to know much about our distict.......so why not move along now and let people who LIVE here and know what they hell they are talking about talk about what WE......the only ones who can vote Wellers ass out talk about what we know.

Im hard on you because you are actting like a troll with that "dont Care" shit.

                •  "Don't care" to me implies (0+ / 0-)

sitting around in your house moping because the mailman didn't drop off a personal invitation to vote for Pavich. I truly hope all the Democrats in your district aren't that way. Presumably a few were out there stuffing envelopes. Those are the ones I'd like to hear from.

                  •  Well 1st I wasnt moping (0+ / 0-)

I put the info out there. The guy ran a bad race....the fact that in a Democrat year he lost and lost by a full 10% has to say something about the man.

I guess it could be worse I could live in Tim Johnsons district.

As for "all the Democrats".....I guess I would say....yea my district is just full of people who cant get worked up for a guy not real intrested in winning.

Weller fights.....I didnt hear Pavich all over the radio or papers. Its not the voters job to have to hunt...just to find out whos running!

                    •  Much better than 2004 (0+ / 0-)

In the 2004 election, Weller won by 18%. So, Pavich cut that in half, and seems to have done it without any support at all from some mopey Dems.

                      •  He still lost (0+ / 0-)

and in a Democrat year...I think 10% is huge.

BTW....there were few real races in 2006 here so many didnt vote.

I guess we should all wear rose colored glasses or something.........then we could put a happy spin on a losing race with a guy who did little to win.....but I grew up.

I agree, it will be tough and the last few Dem candidates have been weak.  I live in the district also, which is strangely drawn.  However, in this district, a smart candidate and a serious effort from the party with financial support, could win the seat.

Not only is he married to the daughter of a notorious killer, but he is involved in some seriously wacko fundementalists shit. Rios Montt is not only a murderer but he does it in the name of god. Zury is a chip off the old block.

So I guesss the good people in Illinois are okay with a congresman who supports religious and ethnic genocide.
