Further fallout from the failed Bush policies continue to manifest themselves. Former Rhode Island Senator Lincoln Chafee has disavowed the Republican Party. Linc Chafee, son of the late R.I. Senator John Chafee, was very popular in a the very Democratic state of Rhode Island. After beating hardcore republican Stephen Laffey he lost in the general election to Sheldon Whitehouse.
As reported in today's Providence Journal Linc Chafee has quit the Republican party. He is quoted as saying "It's not my party anymore"
He said he disaffiliated from the party in June or July.
Linc Chafee lost to Sheldon Whitehouse in the last election. It was the one time I was hoping there was a way to keep Chafee and Whitehouse both. The long reach of G.W. was choking in this case. Who knows, the Democratic party has a big tent and some future races would be perfect for our former senator.
I think as time goes on this may be a trend. The republicans have become so polarizing that other moderate thinking (I'm hoping there are some) folks may have the same inkling to switch to a more reasoned approach to governing.
