The reason the Jen 6 are so important.
I can barely stand to post this pic but I am going to anyway because apparently you need it. The last lynching in this country was in 1959, and that was Emmett Till, and if you don't know who that child was I suggest you look him up, or do you want me to put a pic of him in his coffin up in the joint?
Whites think that racism is a thing of the past but I am here to tell you that I have experienced it first hand, and only in the last 10 years. You see, I was a shop steward on my job, and believe me, I know all about that mess. Do you really need me to tell you how mean, evil and vicious you whites can be when it comes to race hatred? Do you mean to tell me that you have never seen any of your so called friends do anything racially motivated? If you have any black friends who work in an all white environment ask them how it goes. Ask them how many promotions they have been turned down for; how many times they've gotten bad reviews as punishment; how many times white supervisors have punished them for daring to speak up, for trying to right their wrongs. I've been through all of it with whites, so I know just how it is.
Jen happened in the black bloggosphere because of the racial injustice and the disparity that goes with the justice system in this country, especially as it concerns African American males, especially young males. It's a system used to not only to mete out injustice, but to destroy black men in totality, so that they never recover from that shit. They either spend an incredibly inordinate amount of time in jail, or die there for crimes they either did not commit, or the the amount of time give was disproportionate to that of whites.
The kind of racism that is practiced by whites today is incredibly debilitating. You do nothing but spend your time trying to prove who you are, trying to prove that you are just as worthy as your white counterparts, trying to even prove your very intelligence, you are just as equal to everyone there, and it wears on you, emotionally and mentally, and it takes a toll to have to deal with that on a daily basis.
We blogged about the Jena six because we knew that if we didn't another black child would be lost to the system, because as that attorney said, with the stroke of his pen he could end all their lives, and he would have too if we hadn't been vigilant. We blogged about the Jena 6 because enough of putting young black children in jail because you can, enough of throwing our youth away just because you decide they aren't worth a damn anyway, and we blogged because enough, is enough, is enough!
"Except for 1955, when three lynchings were reported in Mississippi, none has been recorded at Tuskegee since 1951. In 1945, 1947, and 1951, only one case per year was reported. The most recent case reported by the institute as a lynching was that of Emmett Till, 14, a Negro who was beaten, shot to death, and thrown into a river at Greenwood, Mississippi on August 28, 1955... For a period of 65 years ending in 1947, at least one lynching was reported each year. The most for any year was 231 in 1892. From 1882 to 1901, lynchings averaged more than 150 a year. Since 1924, lynchings have been in a marked decline, never more than 30 cases, which occurred in 1926...."[32]
This is the message those white children were sending to our black children;
