Tonight, The Advocate reports on our all-powerful and decisive Democratic Congress:
House Leaders May Strip Gender Identity From ENDA
The Democratic House leadership is considering stripping protections for transgender people from ENDA after a preliminary vote count found the measure would not pass if it had trans-inclusive language.
We all know that this bill will be vetoed, so it only matters symbolically.
We've been lobbying for a few years to make them keep ENDA gender-identity inclusive, but it's always a bridesmaid, never a bride...
(Technically, never a bridesmaid either)
I'm not all that eloquent, but this makes me more concerned for myself and my family.
Sometime in the next few years, I'll have to find another job, and it would be nice to be a first or second-class citizen so I could at least sue the future bastards who will reject me because of this stuff.
Right now, there's very little that says the bank can't call the mortgage because they think T people are bad risk...
That the next landlord can't refuse to rent a place to keep my family out of the snow...
That the grocery store can't kick me out because they don't serve "your kind"...
That the restaurant can't kick me out because I had to pee (and I'm post-op!)...
That the insurance company can't say "we don't cover Trans-related problems" after I fall and break my leg...
At least I'm blessed to be able to "pass" well enough that I can mostly live under the radar when I need to.
But everyone does a background check now, so there's no way I can hide when it's important.
This is another instance of "we'll get something done next year" from your Congress:
Iraq...
Election Reform...
Education Reform...
Fixing our roads...
Cleaning our air...
Saving our planet...
Saving our people...
Canada looks better and better, and Montreal was really nice...
