Update [2007-9-28 12:50:54 by DemFromCT]:: Some practical advice on what we can do.
The roll call vote (67 aye and 29 nay) in the Senate this evening means the SCHIP bill will be sent to President Bush with a rousing bipartisan endorsement. It's so bipartisan that it passed both chambers with ease. 18 Republicans in the Senate joined the 45 Republicans in the House to pass this bill. And because that might not be enough for a veto override, members of the House (including my own CT-05 freshman Democrat Chris Murphy) sent a letter to the 22 Republican Governors asking for their support in talking to the person leading their party over a cliff by threatening a veto.
Eighteen Republicans in the Senate, some of whom have been Bush allies for years, voted for the $35 billion increase in the State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP). The Senate GOP defectors joined 45 House Republicans who voted for the bill.
In case you missed the mid-day open thread, James L. at Swing State Project compiled a list of House members in districts with a Partisan Voting Index of R+6 or weaker. The more D, the more ashamed these Congress Democrats should be, including FL-11 Kathy Castor (D+11.0) and OH-10 Dennis Kucinich (D+8.3), NC-02 Bob Etheridge (R+2.7) and NC-07 Mike McIntyre (R+2.8). The override veto vote, if there is one, matters much more so than this, and they'll be plenty of eyeballs on these votes.
In addition, there are non-voting Ds like IN07 Julia Carson, MA10 William Delahunt and TX30 Eddie Bernice Johnson who could use some reminder calls. GA08 Jim Marshall and OK 02 Dan Boren need to be on that list as well.
The list of Republicans should start with the SSP list, including NJ-03 Jim Saxton (D+3.3), MI-09 Joe Knollenberg (R+0.1) and OH-01 Steve Chabot (R+0.5). A reminder that 2008 is not so far away would be in order for them as well.
There's a whole lot more fight left over SCHIP. Let's not leave out any of the responsible parties if Bush and a few Congresspeople manage to deny children the medical coverage they deserve.
