With all the attention focussed on Iowa, MLK day is not getting the attention it normally would. Bush has tried (rather unsuccessfully hehe) to pander to those who treasure Reverend King's memory. Outside of all the last-minute vote rallying in Iowa, especially in the south, African-Americans and others see the very existence of the day as a victory for their cause.
MLK Day activities are a partial preview of what Dems will need to do this fall in their effort to build a coalition inside their big tent. They will have to energize the African-American voters to get a very high turnout by emphasizing recent voting rights violations as a subset of civil rights violations. Many were denied the right to vote in 2000 and that should be a big part of the Dem rallying cry for November 2004. There need to be other pieces of course, but this will be an important one.
General Clark is giving a preview of his plans today with his campaign's activities. I fully expect several other candidates to issue statements or make speeches along the same lines in spite of the fact that they are in a dogfight in Iowa.
