The first explanation for the invasion and occupation of Iraq was that Saddam had WMDs. When no WMDs were found, the White House shifted to Explanation #2: Saddam is a brutal tyrant and we're going to bring freedom and democracy to Iraq. But it's becoming clearer each day that this second explanation is about as valid as the first.
When a couple thousand more American soldiers die, and after we've thrown a few hundred billion more dollars down this rat hole, the President's supporters will tell us that this war was a noble cause. They will say that our intentions were good. But our good intentions won't bring back the dead or heal the maimed.
