This is a story so rich with interesting angles. On Oct. 17, 2007, George W. Bush will partake in bestowing the highest U.S. civilian honor on H.H. The Dalai Lama.
The first angle I'd like to point out is that The 14th Dalai Lama may well be one of the few human beings on the planet that falls outside of two categories: hates Bush, and cynically follows Bush. The Dalai Lama almost certainly feels great compassion for Bush. And I don't mean feels sorry for him. I mean, The Dalai Lama probably feels pure, radiant love and altruistic empathy for our president.
That's remarkable enough. But outside of that, I'd like to ask a question: Why is Bush doing this?
Bush is the first sitting US President to join The Dalai Lama at a public event (according to the press release above). When you compare the philosophies and methods of each man, you get a picture in high contrast.
There really couldn't be a more different between George Bush's 'Preemtive Doctrine' and The Dalai Lama's non-violent approach of living thine enemies. You can see where The Dalai Lama is coming from. He may disagree with Bush's methods, but as noted above, he doesn't hate the man, and he certainly isn't bound by his convictions to snub GW.
But Bush? Unfortunately, there's only two reasons I can honestly attribute to Bush's actions.
First, Bush is making a snub to the Chinese. In fact, this may be the greatest non-military snub available to him. That plays well to Bush's base and republicans in general. Some Americans are scared of China, and as we know, Bush acting tough makes some people feel better. This I think is Bush's (and his advisers) primary rationale.
Second, taken along with the above, you have to consider that the Dalai Lama is a real hero to many of Bush's opponents. That is, being seen as supporting The Dalai Lama is sure to de-fang any criticism coming from the left for the first point above. Perhaps they're even hoping this will score Bush some 'compassionate conservative' points, while the first point above softens any reaction against that from his base.
Of course, its possible I'm being cynical and Bush is interested in showing his heart-felt support for The Dalai Lama's inspiring commitment to non-violence and altruistic action.
My common sense rebels at the preceding paragraph.
What do you think is behind George Bush joining in on honoring The Dalai Lama?
