Via email -- it appears that if you are registered to vote but are NOT a registered Democrat (i.e, say you are a member of the Working Families Party ("WFP")), and you want to vote in the Democratic Presidential primary, you must register as a Democrat by October 12.
This year, the New York primary is early, and could be highly significant in picking the Democratic nominee. So, if you want your voice heard, you MUST register.
Please spread the word!
Email below the flip.
An arcane NY state law could keep millions of independent NY voters from voting in the primary unless they change their registration in the next 5 days. This issue has not been covered in the mainstream media, so it's up to us to spread the word!
Unaffiliated or third-party registered voters must change their party affiliation to Democrat by October 12, 2007 to be able to vote in the NY Democratic Presidential primary. This is a state law unique to NY (N.Y. Elec. Law s 5-304). The registration forms must arrive at a Board of Elections office by COB this Friday. Below is a list of BOE offices.
The Democratic Primaries are NOT winner-take-all, so NYers will have a say in selecting the candidate, especially since the NY primary has been moved up to Super Tuesday. NYers' primary votes will matter this time around. Anyone who wants to vote for Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, John Edwards, Chris Dodd, Bill Richardson, Joe Biden, Dennis Kucinich or Mike Gravel in the primary MUST be registered as Democrats.
This loophole has not been publicized anywhere (except as a tiny notice on the LWV website http://www.lwvnyc.org/... ) and on a couple of local websites. We are asking for your help to spread the word so that millions of independent voters don't lose their chance to vote in the NY primary!
Again, please tell your friends. Don't let them lose their right to vote!
