Because of the importance attached to it by so many, I am reporting breaking news on Sky News in the UK at the moment.
This is that Al Gore will not be throwing his hat in the ring and has formally annouced that he will not stand as a presidential candidate.
I apologise that at the moment I have no other information than this very bare bones statement. I will upgrade the diary as the news comes in.
UPDATE: Plutonium Page has now found this story on the BBC web site
I am conscious that I may be behind the ball game on this and the information may already be with you. If so, I apologise.
It does show, however, that interest in Al Gore running extended well beyond the USA - and that the disappointment in this announcement is felt beyond your borders.
Thank you to Frank and the others for updating this story. Perhaps you could continue to do so as more information is received. Links have been provided in the comments to the Danish story and to Reuters. The Sky news repport was also seen by Kossacks in in Paris
I am disappointed by the reaction of some to this diary and why I find writing here less friendly than in the past. A number have have quite properly suggested that caution is exercised about the provenance of this story and ask if Al Gore has simply displayed the coyness on the issue that he has expressed elsewhere. This is a fair and sensible comment.
Others have gone beyond this and suggest that the headline is misleading and that this is a non-story simply designed to get an Al Gore diary out.
The story simply accurately states what is being reported in Europe at the moment as breaking news. This, by itself is newsworthy. If you don't want to hear this then feel free to attack the diarist.
Even if Al Gore later denies that he hasn't ruled himeself out, the fact that such close interest is being shown in his candidacy outside your borders is by itself worth bringing to your notice. It is also a measure of the global influence of Al Gore and the keen interest being shown in him. There is value in bringing this to the attention of Daily Kos - or so I, perhaps mistakenly, have believed in the past.
