It seems to be gathering steam, from the grass roots on up.
A national 'strike', sort of like "what they do in France".
Would you partake of a national strike, yourself?
If so, what wouldn't you be doing that day?
[Update: other than voting, that is - should have put this at the top of the diary]
I know I could take the day off .. but a lot of people might not be able to do so. Listening to Malloy's radio show tonight, there were a lot of truckers calling in .. it seems they are more angry than even we are.
The way I hear it presented, it's a day to skip school, skip work.
Don't travel by car, don't buy anything.
Jewish people have a day where they do something like this, called Yom Kippur, a Day of Atonement: perhaps, we as a nation need some sort of Day of Reassessment, a day to pause and reflect fully on what are places are in this world.
[bear with me, updating on the fly here] - OK - done now!
The issues we have as progressives and liberals are not the only issues that are burning through the wider American psyche. One of the independent truckers told Malloy [paraphrasing] "I'm not a lefty, but I want to strike, because I am angry".
We have a whole nation of frustrated, disillusioned and angry people. We don't necessarily share all the same reasons why we are this way, but we do share this general emotion.
The nation suffers from what Jimmy Carter called a 'malaise', back in the 70's, but this time it's an angry malaise.
What do we make of this?
anastasia p asks if I have finally gone off the deep end: it IS an Election Day, after all. I would say that most of us agree that Election Day should be a national holiday. I should realize the second I hit 'publish' everyone is on this. 7 seconds isn't a hell of lot of spare time to beat the clock .. lol.
What better way to make a call to have this happen, but to call a national strike, in this off year election. By all means, get out and vote, support your candidates, act as moderators, observers, poll watchers.
Stay home from work, school, don't spend.
But be a good citizen.
Vote, support your candidates.
We should use this day of a national strike to call for Election Day to be declared a national holiday.
