Okay, so the Democrats have lost the whitehouse, the senate, the house of representatives and (soon) any influence on justice system. So now what? How do we democrats explain this? Well, the my fellow colleagues on the left have done wonders about explaining the recent losses inflicted on us by a Neo-Conservative GOP without actually addressing the content of our message. Maybe it's our ideas that need re-vamping? Of course, most liberals (including my own parents) would call me on my questioning the democratic platform.
But the fact remains, why are we losing? Sure, we have been picking some horrid Presidential candidates as of late but our message is to far to the left. I am not say that the left is wrong. But toting old New Deal ideas and programs is just silly. Why not move towards the center? Why not still advocate that abortion remain legal but then propose ideas on how to slow down the abortion rate too? For instance, increase funding towards federal adoption programs or subsidies? What about putting more money and effort towards sex education and prevention in public schools so children avoid being put in the situation on whether or not to have an abortion in the first place? See?? Our party needs to start creating ideas and solutions instead of maintaining the status quo? The GOP is in a really weak position. Strange to think about at first but think about it.
Picture this. Big government. Increased Federal power on social issues. Reckless Spending.
What comes to your mind first, Liberal or Conservative? To be honest, I think, "liberal." The ironic situation is that it is the GOP controlled government that fits these descriptions and not the liberals. Start watching C-Span for 5 minutes out of the day watch how the democrats' arguements are starting to change. Suddenly, you will see Ted Kennedy fighting for states rights and John Kerry advocating Fiscal responsibility. The democratic party is changing, but not because it wants to. It needs to want to! By finally letting the go of the Great Society Methodology, we dems could work miracles in one short election cycle. By declaring a new promise to America publicly we could shift our platform to one that values a fair and just government, and inclusive market that is full of promise, and a solid and reliable community. By changing our policies to work with (and not constantly against) the New Economy of the 21st century and making strides towards ideas that value communities and not just government and order we could not only take back the 3 branches but become the mainstream, for good.
