At my local Borders. I learned several years ago that Barnes & Nobles (the other choice in my chain-store choked community) is a major supporter of right wing politicians, while Borders, at least, donates to both red and blue candidates.
I was inspired by the recommendations of several trusted bloggers (Atrios, Crooks and Liars) and by the stupidity of the New York Times Book Review trashing one of its own. And genuinely looking forward to a good read.
When I entered the store, I nearly tripped on the display of Ann Coulter's latest screed. And Alan Greenspan's. And Bill O's. But I could not find Professor Krugman's "The Conscience of a Liberal" to save my skin. I looked and looked, but the book was on none of the "important new nonfiction" or "bestselling nonfiction" tables. To find it, I had to search the shelves under Political Science, but even then it wasn't easy. I literally had to pick up another book to reach a copy.
When I found my copy (only one more remained!) I took it immediately to the cashier and complained that the store in a progressive town in the Midwest gave so much play to right wing liars. The cashier was sympathetic. But the decision about what to highlight was made at the corporate level.
So I'm writing to Borders Corporate headquarters (100 Phoenix Dr.
Ann Arbor, MI 48108-2202) to complain.
Where else should I be buying books?
