I'm in crunch mode at work and have spent the last four hours staring at spreadsheets. Consequently, my brain is mush and I desperately need a distraction.
I ordered a few of my favorite never-get-tired-of-watching-them movies on DVD recently -- Local Hero, Bagdad Cafe, The Fisher King, Gosford Park.
Most folks have heard of these, more or less. But I also have a few favorites that a lot of people have never heard of, such as:
Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang -- A dark, very funny comedy with Robert Downey Jr. and Val Kilmer that parodies action movies and does it brilliantly.
My Dinner with Andre -- Wallace Shawn and Andre Gregory sit in a restaurant and eat dinner and talk. Yep, that's all there is to it. I love it.
Parting Glances -- I think this may have been the first film to deal with the AIDS epidemic -- it dates back to 1986. I know it's the first film I ever saw Steve Buscemi in, and I've been a diehard fan ever since.
The Station Agent -- Hands down my favorite movie of the past few years.
My Brilliant Career -- A very young Judy Davis and a very young Sam Neill, directed by a very young Gillian Armstrong.
Enchanted April -- This one's so obscure you can't even get it on DVD. (Update: at least not in the US). But oh what a lovely little movie it is.
Update: Adding some more I thought of.
Belizaire the Cajun
Jesus of Montreal
Miracle Mile
A relatively recent one: The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada
Also recent-ish: American Splendor
