After tonight, the balance is unchanged -- 28 Dems, 22 GOP -- with just Louisiana and Kentucky switching sides.
Looking ahead to 2008, the following states have gubernatorial contests:
Delaware (D - open)
Indiana (R)
Missouri (R)
Montana (D)
New Hampshire (D)
North Carolina (D - open)
North Dakota (R)
Utah (R)
Vermont (R)
Washington (D)
West Virginia (D)
We've got our best pickup opportunity in Missouri and potential contests in Indiana and Vermont. But we'll mostly be playing defense in those open Delaware and North Carolina seats, a tough race in Washington, and potentially competitive races in West Virginia, New Hampshire (if Lynch retires), and Montana (though I'm not too worried about Schweitzer).
p.s. In 2010, we'll have 18 open seats, 11 of them Democratic. There will be 34 gubernatorial contests that year, 19 of them Democratic.
