I know this is a double edged sword and likely to be pretty controversial, but I'm curious about whether we could generate some net roots pressure for Congress and the President to perform by raising the issue of a national Presidential recall. If you couldn't get support for recall with the president's support in the 20's and congress in the teens, well, if not now, when? I'm pretty sure that the founding fathers didn't have 'internet time' and weapons of mass destruction in mind when they decided on term lengths without the ability to recall elected officials.
I don't think we have the luxury of waiting for the next election. The cynic in me believes that the Dems are just running out the clock trying not to fix things too soon in order to capitalize on the public's dislike for the war and all things Bush to grab a veto-proof majority in '08.
According to what I could find online, 18 states currently have the ability to recall state officials. Of course we all remember the California recall in 2003. Recalls are currently prohibited at a federal level. What kind of people-powered activities could change that? Does anyone know if this is a constitutional change? I'm assuming that it is which probably makes this a moot discussion since we'd be counting on the folks that are the problem to let us fix it.
But would it be worth it if stirring up this issue at the net roots level gave anti-war voters something to rally around? Could it keep Bush from doing too much damage in the remaining time... maybe keep him from expanding the war into Iran? I know that when I'm worrying about keeping my job, I'm (a) on my best behavior and (b) likely to spend most of my time trying to keep it. What if we came up with our own slate of pro-recall candidates, each signing a pledge to support future recall efforts if elected in '08?
Any thoughts?
