Back in the early years when a younger, more flagrant George W. Bush gently hinted at the idea that some tax dollars might be shifted over to "faith based" efforts, I knew then exactly what he meant. But it's taken this long for it to get this blatant. Faith Based Initiative he called it.
We are now paying for christian misinformation and hellfire & brimstone ideology with our hard earned money whether we like it or not.
The clock is ticking away on the reign of the confederate south in America. There's only so much time left to invade Iran before a Democrat is elected president. And there's only so much time left to raid the till as much as possible to pay back the christian right for their votes in 2000 and 2004.
The separation between church and state has been flung so far out of whack we actually have Governors begging a christian god for rain on live TV now. (Update: At this moment, I am listening to confederate, Paul Broun (R-GA) citing paragraphs and paragraphs of christian scripture in House session as though he's quoting the Constitution.) But it's worse. Much worse.
Talking Points Memo and Huffington Post report a finding that pisses me off and terrifies me at the same time.
Despite reservations from some in Congress, nearly $6 million in grants have been given to 21 pregnancy centers since the beginning of 2006, according to new data obtained by Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington. Many of these centers are receiving far more federal funding then they seemingly could need.
"Reservations"?! Fucking "reservations"?! This should have been met with unprecedented outrage and should be barked about everytime the words "earmarks" and "federal spending" are vomited on the House and Senate floors.
Now as I recall it, the purpose of a spike in federal tax dollars to churches was to create a grassroots system of assistance for people in need, as in the Katrina Hurricane disaster. My first clue as to how unbridled the raid of the cash register would be was when it started showing up in faith based "Abstinence Only" programs which progressives rightly predicted would be an abyssmal failure.
Now it's just an out and out robbery. We're paying for AntiAbortion Clinics. And these people aren't holding their 14th Century christian rhetoric close to the vest!
On its website, the Westside Pregnancy Resource Center in Los Angeles suggests that women who receive abortions could experience an increased risk of breast cancer, a conclusion at odds with the mainstream medical consensus. As a reference, the center links to a 1986 letter government scientists wrote to the British journal Lancet. The Crisis Pregnancy Center, Inc. in Anchorage Alaska, meanwhile, sites suicidal thoughts, alcohol and drug abuse and spiritual consequences as post-abortion side affects, without offering elaboration. Other centers suggest that women can experience infertility, "post-abortion stress disorder" and even a "fear of punishment from God" following an abortion.
It's not just unscientific. It's not just unfounded, or even just ridiculous.
It's a treasonous smashing of the United States Constitution's protection against the establishment and support of a church through tax dollars.
I have to say, I get really disappointed when I come to Daily Kos expecting to see really great, albeit dastardly and depressing writing like this, and instead I get candidate food fights.
I can't wait til the fucking primaries are over so we can get back to paying attention. Because it's almost as though the entire confederate side of the country knows we're not right now. And they are...as my southern friends might coin..."a-gittin' whalst the gittin's good."
