The ideas posted on the Diary boards are great. Hat's off to Kos & Company for such a wonderful web site.
As I read comments on the Immigration Issue, there's a lot of passion & humanity expressed for the illegal (mostly Hispanic) immigrants to this country.
But there's an flawed logic to the humanitarian notion behind amnesty for illegal immigrants. To many in the Democratic party, withholding amnesty is a cruelty of near racist proportions. But I have to ask a simple question:
Doesn't a large portion of the World desire US Citizenship? In spite of our faults, thousands of people risk their lives every day on foot, in boats, and in cargo containers to reach our country. Its easy to look at these folks and consider amnesty as a humanitarian issue. But the bottom line is that illegal immigrants come here not for our Government, climate, or cuisine. They come here to increase their wealth and economic security. Poverty line in the US is considered an upper-middle class lifestyle in many parts of India, China or Africa.
So my assertion is this; if we extend amnesty to illegal immigrants, most of whom are Hispanic, are we not being discriminatory to other groups in the world? If amnesty is to be granted based solely on one's ability to illegally bypass our border/naturalization process, shouldn't we extend this offer to the rest of the world?
Seriously, where does it end? Once on this slippery slope, the logical result is an open border. And with it the destruction of America's present standard of living.
Just a thought...
