In looking up a favorite quote of mine for a comment in another diary I came across the quotation(s) below from the 26th President of the United State, Theodore Roosevelt. It is amazing on how pertinent his words are today. Of course, Republicans would say that the LAST sentence is the important one, but I beg to differ. A couple more below the fold.
On Loyalty:
"Our loyalty is due entirely to the United States. It is due to the President only and exactly to the degree in which he efficiently serves the United States. It is our duty to support him when he serves the United States well. It is our duty to oppose him when he serves it badly. This is true about Mr. Wilson now and it has been true about all our Presidents in the past. It is our duty at all times to tell the truth about the President and about every one else, save in the cases where to tell the truth at the moment would benefit the public enemy."
On doing the right thing:
"In a moment of decision, the best thing you can do is the right thing to do. The worst thing you can do is nothing."
This is something our leaders in congress should consider.
On the country (and I would extend this one to the world) we live in:
"This country will not be a good place for any of us to live in unless we make it a good place for all of us to live in."
Replace country with world above and you can be talking directly about the climate crisis.
It should be remembered that not only was Roosevelt a leader of the Republican Party, he was also a leader in the progressive movement of the time. He was a historian, a conservationist, and fought the well-entrenched monopolies of the time to level the playing field for the average citizen.
I wish I had more witty comments to add to this, but really the three quotes are what truly struck me.
