I had left the high school classroom with permission to go to the restroom, and in the distance heard an announcement over the loudspeaker that the President had been shot. I went back to the shocked and silent classroom.....
JFK made a huge difference in my life, and expectations for even more where halted in Dallas. Details of the assasination are still in question even today are being cleared up (see Wired News Nov. 22, 1963: A Magic Bullet, a Grassy Knoll, an Enduring Mystery)
But little question remains in my mind of what a great President JFK was.
As for FDR every time I see that cheesy photo on the Ad on dailykos I am reminded of what an incredible legacy he left behind...
Question is, would JRE have a similar impact as President as the other two worthies?
JFK ---
"Ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country." He also asked the nations of the world to join together to fight what he called the "common enemies of man: tyranny, poverty, disease, and war itself." In closing, he expanded on his desire for greater internationalism: "Finally, whether you are citizens of America or citizens of the world, ask of us the same high standards of strength and sacrifice which we ask of you."[16]
The space race... Civil rights..... Bay of Pigs (oops) and on and on until his death marked an abrupt end to a hopeful period...
Edwards has recently invoked the name of JFK and got me to wondering about the possibilities. Especially his call for public sacrifice on energy use changes in LA last week
What kind of new deal would JRE be able to accomplish?
Sacrifice? GWB told us to go shopping after 9/11!
JFK + FDR = JRE
Is this a lame comparison, or are there exciting similarities?
