The Christian Science Monitor reports that the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine (for stem cell research) will be located in San Francisco:
Still smarting from the dotcom bust, San Francisco wins bid to become hub of stem-cell research...instantly establishes San Francisco as the national capital of stem-cell research. And for a city brash enough to call itself "The City," it hints at a renewed swagger - and a promising future - after the humiliation of the tech collapse.
"It is the seat of power," says Jeffrey Kahn, director of the Center for Bioethics at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. "The role of kingmaker will be played there."
There are some clouds on the horizon, however.

The San Jose Mercury News reports:
One potential hindrance involves two lawsuits... one... brought by the Life Legal Defense Foundation... claims Proposition 71 is unconstitutional because it is ``unaccountable to the public.''
State officials are trying to expedite resolution of all such suits...While that gets resolved, the institute is operating on a $3 million loan from the state's general fund...it is also ``looking at the possibility of putting together $100 million from various charitable donors,'' to enable the agency to continue operating beyond November even if the lawsuit delays the bond sale.
