Why give $$$ now I wonder? Is money spent in the primary worthwile?
Lots of people are donating to their favorite democratic presidential candidates. I'm not. I'm not goint to give anything until a candidate is chosen.
It seems to me that all the money being spent on the primary campaign would be much better spent on the general election. I know about the $2000 limits but I doubt very many of us are maxing those out. Anyway I still think it makes more sense to give the extra to a 507 instead of a primary candidate.
After all, the goal of this election cycle is defeating Bush. Whoever the nominee is will need ever dollar they can get to do so. It seems to me that narrowing the fundraising gap is important and that we should concentrate on saving our money for that rather than pushing for primary candidates.
After all, none of us really knows which candidate is the most electable. Clarkies say its Clark, deaniacs say its Dean but no one knows. The question is, is it better to put your money behind your belief or accept that you may be wrong and save it for the general. In other words, if your candidate spends all his money on the primary and still loses money that could have been spent on defeating Bush has now gone to waste.
Even if your candidate is chosen he will have spent at least some of your money getting chosen and that money too could have gone to helping him win the general.
Of course giving money to a specific candidate is reasonable if you think that you have knowledge about the electibility of your candidate that the public doesn't have and that therefore you should spend your money getting him nominated and therefore making Bush's defeat more likely. You also might give the money if you thought your candidate was so much better than the other frontrunners that its worth the risk of nominating him for the potential benefits his victory might bring.
What do people who have donated think?
