I thought it was a wonderful Holiday gift to Congress....kind of like coals in their stockings.
In case you mentioned this you can read the article as presented by Katrina Vanden Heuvel on The Nation. I found this article on Huffington, and wish I because I still have not figured out to do a link, just wanted to give you that direction.
The letter is signed by many well know and highly respected attorney's and it made me very sad to think that after the hundreds and probably thousands or emails and letters Congress has received from Kos people, and all across this country, that finally, one thousand men and women are shaming them. Good. Good. Good. Good and More Good.
In the letter the American Lawyers Defending The Constitution demand that John Conyers and Patrick Leahy step up to the plate and play ball. As quoted:
In a conference call with reporters yesterday, Michael Ratner, president of the Center for Constitutional Rights and winner of the 2007 Puffin/Nation Prize for Creative Citizenship, said: "The majority of lawyers in this country understand that the Bush administration has really gone off the page of constitutional rights and off the page of fundamental rights, and is willing to push the Congress to restore those rights." Ratner said he was "dismayed" that a Democratic majority has failed "to push on key illegalities... the torture program, and now the destruction of the tapes involving the torture program; the warrantless wiretapping, the denial of habeas corpus, the secret sites/rendition program, special trials, and of course what we now know is the firing of US Attorneys scandal.... The minimal that absolutely is needed to get us back on the page of law is to have serious investigative hearings that go up the chain of command and figure out who is responsible for what."
Also found it pretty amazing, but not at all a surprise that because of Dick Cheney, the women that are stepping up charing Halliburton with rape charges, are: GUESS WHAT? OFF THE HOOK. That's right folks, The Bushco Land of Blackwater Murders Are Us, and now Hallibuton Rapists Are Us, get a free ride. And the beat goes on.
The jest of the letter from the ONE THOUSAND LAWYERS essentially states that our cowardly congress (Republican and Democrat alike) can issue all the demands they want for documents, tapes, interviews, etc, but if they do not have the integrity to charge these crooks, liars, thieves and murders with contempt charges, hey, its just another bag of smelly farts with lots of photo play and bullshit.
Merry Christmas Congress, how does it feel to be humiliated in public by your own peers? Thank you Governor Cuomo, thank you to all the Attorney's that signed this letter. Now, would each of you that signed that letter go out a get say, 5 million more of your fellow attorneys to sign it, or better still, show up in Congress, and scream your asses off in defense of what you are paid on a daily basis to defend. It would be nice if someone, somewhere, in your chosen field would actually take some courageous action and demand that our tattered Constitution be sewn back together. If you don't do this soon, you may not have any more clients to work for, and then you would all have to go out and get some real jobs.
Good Tidings to You,
Badabing
