So why would a Democrat be pulling for a republican to get the nomination who could possibly win the general election? I will go over a few reasons but mainly it comes down to one word ... Torture.
As many have commented to me for themselves, I feel that I could be happy with about any of the Democratic candidates. Obama is a competent and inspiring leader, Edwards deserves more credit than I usually give him, and Clinton is not as awful as some people make her out to be.
What about the awful republican field though? It gives me the creeps to think the top three polling Republicans could get the nomination. Giuliani is a fascist in the worst sense. He initially refused to leave office when his term was up. Enough said. Except that he might be the best candidate for us to run against.
Hucabee and Romney are both my worst nightmare, next to the current miserable administration. To put a religious frame on it, they are true believers aspiring to become instruments of Satan.
McCain ran against Bush last time. In retrospect he couldn't possibly have been any worse as a president than George Junior. Sure he has taken awful positions, and can be argued to be reprehensible, and I am sure many would point to that in the comments if any number of people were blogging this fine Saturday during the hollidays, but he tries to work with Democrats, he goes against the Republicans when he thinks they are wrong, and he would probably actually try to be a good president.
Many here have grudges that they bring up at any possible opportunity with any candidate. Why we should never support xxx. Siding with the current administration, being best pals with Lieberman etc. That is not the point though. Of all of the republican candidates, which one is the least awful? They already seem to have dropped Thomson. It would be nice if I could give a poll that allows ranking but I will have to just give you one choice.
The republicans have never shied away from manipulating our process. Should we be secretly trolling on republican websites and pushing the least awful candidate? If you have the cajones to do that I would recommend pushing McCain. We could do worse and we already have.
