The last few weeks have been a little crazy for all of us; the next few days are likely to get even crazier. At times this place feels like a "war zone" during primary season.
Since all the campaigns are "going dark" for the holidays, we figured that we would step back and enjoy time with our families and friends. No campaigning, no "Obama is great" diaries, nothing. Not only is it pretty unseemly during this season, it's also really time-consuming.
I'm sure you've all heard this story before, but on Christmas Day, 1914, in the middle of perhaps the most brutal and pointless war the world has ever known, peace broke out. German and Allied soldiers, knowing they'd been trying like hell to kill each other just the day before and that they would be again the next, took Christmas off to exchange gifts, read a Psalm to remember their fallen comrades, and play a game of soccer.
It's a really touching story - and even though we're not at war with one another (and we'd do well to remember this as often as we can), it's good to have a day to simply lay down arms and realize that, as Senator Obama would put it, "the things that unite us are far greater than the things that divide us."
We're all human beings, with friends and families we care about, with needs and hopes and desires, with lives we want to live and dreams we want to fulfill. We're also all Democrats; we all believe in peace and harmony with our neighbors both local and global, in an economy that serves the whole of society and not just the few, in a government that is open, honest, and responsive to its employers.
About a week ago, I sent out emails to some of the prominent Obama Supporters on this site asking them to send a holiday greeting to everyone. I'm going to copy them below, and ask that any people I missed (forgive me!), and anyone else who wants to, put their holiday greetings in the comments. Let's make this thread a truce from the Primary Wars; we can resume our fights about who's better and who's more electable on Wednesday.
So, from The Obama Supporters to you: "Happy Holidays, Merry Christmas, Happy Chanukah, Happy Kwanzaa, Pleasant Yule, a Delightful Festivus, and a Happy New Year!"
thanks to mistersite for these wonderful words.....
