On second thought, I'll summarize what Limbaugh has on his website right here. Hillary Clinton is getting old and unattractive, he says, and whether it's fair or not (he goes on) this hurts her in a way it wouldn't hurt a male candidate, because women are judged more than men on their physical appearance. Which means, says Limbaugh, that she will become less and less effective as a leader as the heavy burden of the Presidency turns her into a hag. He's careful to sprinkle this stuff with how unfair all of this is but it's just reality, and all of that.
That's a fair summary. I could add personal remarks, such as "Rush Limbaugh looks like a booger," but I won't. That would be unfair. I'll address the substance of his concern, which is not a concern for Hillary, of course, but concern for himself, and for all other men who look like boogers.
After all, what is beauty? Among other things, it is a form of power.
The teeming Mother, anxious for her Race
begs for each Birth the fortune of a Face...*
A woman's face, Dr. Johnson says, is her fortune. Suppose, though, the woman has, or gets, another sort of fortune--say, a whole lot of money, or a powerful political office. Suppose now she gets fat, or old, or both--as fat and old and physically unattractive as, say, Rush Limbaugh. Is her mother still begging the fortune of a face? Of course not. Daughter is comfy. Daughter has control of her destiny. Mother is not begging for anything. Mother is getting dressed for a nice dinner.
Suppose further. Suppose the same woman--old and wrinkled and even overweight as she may have become--is President of the United States. Will there be any mothers left in the entire country begging for anything? No. They will see and sense in their guts that they don't have to wait to be given power--they can simply take it.
And they will take it. Gradually at first, then not gradually--eagerly, with a will to fight and with a complete lack of apology for their ambitions.
Which will increase gender competition in the marketplace.
Which will, inevitably, devalue male economic power.
Which will increase the economic value of male good looks.
Which means, really, that it's not Hillary's looks Limbaugh worries about. It's Limbaugh's looks Limbaugh worries about. Because if the marketplace ever actually became gender-competitive, Rush Limbaugh might need a tummy tuck.
